Features 24 of the best-known fairy tales in the exact words in which they were first published in English or, in a few cases, in the exact words of the earliest surviving or source text. Wonderfully illustrated with over 40 color illustrations and many more black & white, the drawings show how the fairy tales have been visualized in popular and juvenile literature since their first publication. Illustrators include some of the finest illustrators of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Arthur Rackham, Kate Greenaway, Gustave Doré , Thomas Bewick and Rex Whistler.

For each tale, the editors provide a historical introduction, showing the development of the story, citing parallels in other countries and centuries, and noting the curious changes to the tales over the years.
