—Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1847 narrative poem, Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie, tells the story of Evangeline Bellefontaine, an Acadian woman separated from her childhood sweetheart, Gabriel Lajeunesse, during the British expulsion of the Acadians from Nova Scotia in 1755. The poem explores themes of love, longing, and the devastation of war.
