The poem explores themes of love, longing, and the devastation of war.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was a beloved 19th century American poet, educator, and translator. His lyrically beautiful and gently moralizing verse made him a national literary figure by the 1850s and a world-renowned personality by his death. Longfellow wrote about American history, landscape, the American Indian, and Slavery, his works inspired many artists and composers.
