—Black Beauty: The Autobiography of a Horse, written by Anna Sewell in 1877, is a fictionalized account of a horse's life, told from the horse's perspective. The story follows Black Beauty, a well-bred, nearly all-black horse, from his carefree days as a colt on an English farm to his challenging life pulling cabs in London and eventual happy retirement. Black Beauty encounters a range of owners, some kind and some cruel, and forms friendships with other horses.

Charles William James Keeping was an English illustrator, children's book author and lithographer. He made the illustrations for Rosemary Sutcliff's historical novels for children, and he created more than twenty picture books. He also illustrated the complete works of Charles Dickens for the Folio Society.
