—John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) was an American Quaker poet and advocate for the abolition of slavery. Many considered him and his work a national treasure, causing his birthday to be made a holiday in many states.
He is now largely remembered for his anti-slavery writings and such poems as Barbara Frietchie, "The Barefoot Boy", "Maud Muller" and Snow-bound.
